Crowns are root cutting that have sprouted and have established roots. Before shipping, I remove a majority of the soil around the roots and trim the foliage back to the stem base. One rooted plant per order.
Comfrey is one my favorite plants to have on the farm. This perennial has a variety of uses. For centuries it was used for medicinal purposes and was even called "bone knit". We use it in the following ways:
Fertilizer - Great chop and drop plant. We cut it as many as 3 times a year and place the cuttings around annuals, fruit trees, and berry patches.
Dynamic Accumulator - The roots of comfrey go deep and pull a multitude of minerals from the ground.
Pollinator Attractant - The small bell-shaped flowers on Russian Comfrey attract all kinds of pollinators. This makes it such a good companion plant in the garden.
Weed Barrier - Due to its rapid growth and thick foliage, it makes a perfect edge plant to separate landscaping areas from grass area or walkways.
Animal Feed - The protein in comfrey is higher than soy! It is a great feed supplement for our chickens.
Our comfrey is the Russian STERILE variety. It only propagates via root cuttings. It produces no viable seed. That being said, plant comfrey in a spot you want to to be for a long time as it is difficult to remove all the root elements that can start a new plant.
Includes Russian Bocking #4 or Bocking #14. Very similar and hard to distinguish from each other.
